Teambuilding event supports Mexico City orphanage

I am fortunate to take part in community activities with my colleagues year round. Although the focus is others, you share a sense of camaraderie with co-workers during the time spent together. One of the greatest feelings is being part of a group focused on helping others. The CH2M HILL Foundation recognizes the positive results of groups of employees focused on helping others through its emphasis on employee engagement. This is just one of the many reasons that I am honored to serve on the CH2M HILL Foundation Board of Directors.

I recently got to be part of this experience at a meeting for the global employee network group Enlace (which means “link” in Spanish) bringing together employees that share an affinity for the Latino/Hispanic culture within the company. As part of this meeting, employees shared an afternoon at Ministerios De Amor—an orphanage in Mexico City that our employees support year round.IMG_8548_foundation

We spent the afternoon with the children, taking them gifts representative of countries where employees live around the world. The orphanage was in dire need of simple things that we take for granted such as a roof and light bulbs. The sleeping quarters did not have a roof allowing for rain to enter the facility. This made the facility too cold during the winter for the children to sleep. The facility also needed light bulbs to provide lighting during the nighttime. The darkness frightened the children interrupting simple actions such as going to the bathroom at night.

Enlace team members came together to provide the time and financial support for the purchase and installation of a roof, light bulbs and other facility needs for the orphanage. The time spent with the children is very special and rewarding—to know that you have brought happiness to those that are less fortunate. Children are so resilient that even though their living conditions are not the best, they are happy with what they have and become their own unique family. One of the most incredible things I saw in that afternoon were “Tios” (uncles) who came back to the facility to help spend time with the children. The “Tios” where all orphans themselves that have gone on to make their living outside of the orphanage but come back every day to help the new young ones that enter the facility by lending their time and talent.

It was a very special day, not only because of the contribution of time, facility needs, and toys to the orphanage but seeing employees come together to help others. It is a truly powerful connection that employees and our communities are part of every day!
