Day 2: We Aren’t in Kansas Anymore

There is a classic line in the movie The Wizard of Oz that I think fits today. If you recall, the first part of the movie was all shot in black and white. However, when Dorothy and Toto step out of their house when it lands in Oz, it transitions to brilliant color. Dorothy comments to Toto, “Toto, I don’t think we are in Kansas anymore.”

DSCN5144The reality that things are really different hit today as we saw more of the beautiful country of Nicaragua. We saw the bustling city of Managua, the busy highway to Estelí, went shopping for groceries in Estelí (who knew that they sell rice in 50kg bags!) and drove on roads that ranged from nicely paved to little more than a rocky dirt path through the gorgeous mountains to the site. Once we arrived at the La Brisa site, we were greeted by the whole community and the Mayor!

We quickly realized that schedules are tentative. We had issues with two of our vehicles and had to switch part way through. We were supposed to meet with the Mayor in the early afternoon, but due to delays, we missed her in town and so she made the effort to come to the bridge site. We were also anxious to set up camp before dark, but wanted to honor the Mayor and so we greeted her and gladly ate the dinner that she brought the team. DSCN5163

However, as I sit here watching a full moon rise over the mountains of Nicaragua with a little Nicaraguan friend watching over my shoulder, I know that while things are different, that doesn’t make them good or bad, just different. With that realization, we head out on what will prove to be an interesting journey as we build this 56-meter suspension bridge.
