As of 7:10 p.m. local time today, Monday, June 8, all members of the Bridges to Prosperity Rwanda team are scheduled to arrive in Kigali. Traveling a collective 95,039 miles and logging nearly 200 hours in transit, the 13 team members will battle jet lag with their excitement to meet their teammates.

The best part of traveling is experiencing new environments and cultures. In my years of traveling, I have enjoyed many types of food, new definitions of “personal space,” and an appreciation for the human spirt. Since I have started traveling with CH2M, I have become interested in experiencing different workplace environments. Most of us are familiar with the office setting, but in this nation and across the world, a workplace can mean a factory, a farm, a mine, or even space! And, in a few short days, I will to be in rural Rwanda helping our Bridges to Prosperity team construct a bridge across a river.

I am in the throes of preparation and packing for my departure for Africa on Sunday afternoon and I can only think about one thing: ME! It is so easy to fall victim to selfishness. Not the bad type of selfishness with lack of care for others, but the type of selfishness with concerns mainly focused on myself. I have been so absorbed in myself that I am looking forward to my trip to Rwanda for two challenging yet rewarding weeks of selflessness.
